Where-is-Allah?

If you ask people Where is Allah, some will say he is everywhere, some will say he is in every living soul, some will say he is in every human soul and not animals, some will claim he is in every good human being and not in bad human being etc.. but if you ask them how you know this and from where did you get this? Did you met Allah or Jibrael(AS) came with the wahi and informed you about this?

Isnt it better to ask Allah where he is?: Quran is the word of Allah and he has already mentioned in his book where he is and also we find hadith of Prophet Muhammad(SAWS) which answer this question and clarify the unwanted doubts.

Where is the confusion:In quran there are verses which is to be taken literally and few of them needs to be taken as metamorphical. E.g in below verse of Quran:

When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way. (Baqarah2:186)

Now, above verse should not be taken literally as it is a metamorphical sentence. Allah is closer to us means Allah is saying that we living being must not feel alone as he has not forgotten us and he listen to our prayers and we must not get depressed. This verse is a motivational statement.

Another example,

It is mentioned in saying of prophet Muhammad(SAWS) Paradise lies beneath Mother’s feet (Sunan an-Nasa’i , Vol. 1, Book 25, Hadith 3106).

It was narrated from Mu’awiyah bin Jahimah As-Sulami, that Jahimah came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said:

“O Messenger of Allah! I want to go out and fight (in Jihad) and I have come to ask your advice.” He said: “Do you have a mother?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then stay with her, for Paradise is beneath her feet.”

This cannot be taken literally and is metamorphical sentence because what prophet meant here was is he must respect his mother and take care of her instead of going to Jihad. Also it is mentioned in Quran to be dutiful to your parents  (Quran- Surah Isra Chapter 17: Verse number 23-24)

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.”

Note: Many verses in Quran and hadith is a clear proof that Allah is not everywhere or in human soul but above his creation.

Evidences from the Qur’an that Allah is above his creation:

1) The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established (Quran: Chapter Taha 20: verse 5)

2) Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).(Quran Al-Baqarah 2:255)

3) Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah’s permission, on every errand:

(Quran: Al Qadr 97:4)

4) Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.(Quran: Isra 17:1)

 Few more verses:

5) “And when Allah said: ‘O Jesus! I will take you and raise you to Myself’.”[3:55]

6)”To Him ascend (all) the goodly words, and the righteous deeds lift them.”[35:10]

7)”From Allah, the Lord of the Places of Ascent, the angels and the Ruh (Gabriel) ascend to Him in a day the measure whereof is of fifty thousand years.”[70:3-4]

8)“We all know Jibrael(AS) used to bring revelation to the prophet; from where?;

9) Surah Maarij 70:4 ” The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.”

10) Surah Al Haq 69:17 ” And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].”

Evidences from the Sunnah (the Way) of the Prophet

The sunnah of the Prophet is the explanation of the Quran. One cannot take the Quran alone without letting the sunnah tag along. Like the Quran, the Prophet made it extremely clear the truth on this matter of where Allah is. Some of the ahadith on this matter are quoted next:

1) Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?” (Bukhari)

2) Abu Hurairah narrates that the Messenger said, “Whoever donates the equal of a date from whatever was collected righteously, and only good is ascended to Allah, then, He will accept it (the charity) with His Right and raise it for its giver till it becomes like a mountain.” [Bukhari]

3)Jabir ibn Abdillah said: “The Messenger of Allah said in his speech on the day of Arafah: ‘Did I convey (the Message).’ They said: ‘Yes.’While raising his finger to the sky and then pointing at them, he said: ‘O my Lord, be a witness.” [Muslim]

Finally, justice cannot be done to this topic without mentioning the hadith about the slave-girl, whose faith was affirmed by just two questions, one being ‘Where is Allah?’:

4) Muawiyah bin Al-Hakam As-Salmi said:”I had a slave-girl who used to herd sheep for me. One day I discovered that a wolf had killed one of her sheep, and I’m a man from the children of Adam, I get upset like they get upset, and I slapped her in the face. Then I went to the Prophet who impressed upon me the seriousness of my act. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, should I not set her free?’ He said, ‘Bring her to me.’ He asked her, ‘Where is Allah’, She said, ‘He is above the heavens.’ He said, ‘Who am I?’ She said, ‘You are the Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Free her, for she is a believer.’ (Muslim and Abu Dawud)

The Companions of the Prophet used to refer to him all of their problems, whether minor or major. Hence, all issues for judgment should be referred to Allah and His Messenger, acting upon the Statement of Allah :

“But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Mohammed) a judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” (Qura.4: 65)
